Don't let the pigeon drive the bus for Digital Dozen does books

I have some more nail art inspired by kids books, because as a mum of school aged kids, their books out number my books in the household. This was a book of my daughters when she was younger, it's a cute story about a pigeon that wants to drive the bus and tries to come up with a bunch of different ways to try to convince you to let it.

Loving how the nail art looks against the book cover from a distance. Not loving it so much up close because of my messy lines.

Was nice to pull out some older Ulta3 shades for this mani. The neutral shade was called Allure and the blue was Soft Hydrangea.

40 Great Nail Art Ideas - over a pale blue base

This week brings a return to the colour and technique prompts for the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group.

These are definitely my favourite types of prompt.

The theme this week is over a 'pale blue base' and my technique prompt was patchwork. These were so fun to create.

My base is Ulta3 Spring Shower. I then used the DRK XL Designer plate 1 and chose three different images. I also grabbed out three different stamping polishes, white and two shades of blue.

I used liquid latex to mask off different sections of my nails before stamping. I started using Color 4 Nails Crystalline Veil, but then switched to the Dance Legend version as it has a wider brush and makes applying it quicker. After stamping each design I applied a layer of top coat so that the stamping didn't peel off when I applied the latex barrier over it for the next stamp.

When I was all done with the stamping, I used a fine nail art brush and black polish to paint the lines and stich marks.

How to make any nail polish work for watermarbling

Following on from my earlier post about how to make your own neon water marbling polishes, today I'm going to show you how to make just about any nail polish work for water marbling.

The polishes I'm going to use are Ulta3. I've been able to get some Ulta3 polishes to work for a watermarble, but they were brand new. The polishes below are not brand new, they are all at least a year old, some even older.

Ulta3 polishes rarely spread in the water for me, and if I do manage to get them to spread by wobbling the water, then I can't get a nice clean drag through the polish. It always grabs and pulls lumps through or leaves huge gaps. This was the best I was able to get in several trys.

The trick that has worked for me is the same one that I used for the neon polishes. You need to thin them out. For these polishes again I added a full dropper full of thinner. In the pink polish, which was half empty and a bit dried out, I added nearly three droppers full. Again you have to really shake them to make sure the thinner is mixed in really well. You are aiming for a consistency that will drip off the end of the brush quickly and easily.

This is easily the best watermarble I've been able to create with ulta3 polishes. Although the ulta3 polishes still have a tendancy to separate when you drag the needle through., which leaves fine gaps that will show you base colour (white in this instance).

Ulta3 - Live life to the Matte Collection

Aussie super brand Ulta3 has some new shades coming out this August, and they all feature a velvety smooth matte finish. The collection have five nail polish shades to go along with five new lipsticks and three pressed powders.

I have to say I did find the collection of five colours a little odd, a peach, two nudes, and ice blue and a dark plum. The Collection doesn't scream winter or spring, but on the up side, they did also release a matte top coat, so you can create the same velvety finish using any polishes, and at $2.30 they are still the cheapest brand available in Australia that is still a good quality.

The formula on these was actually a little tricky for me. I had to wait until each layer was totally dry before doing the next coat and I found that the polish didn't level out as smoothly as a glossy one. Usually this wouldn't matter cause I'd apply a great self leveling top coat like Seche Vite, but because I was leaving these without top coat to see the velvety finish, the unevenness annoyed me a little.

Let's look at the shades. I used two coats for all these swatches, although some of them would have looked better for these swatch photos at three coats.

Adore - a soft pastel peachy pink.

Dashing - a dark purple plum shade.

Ice ice - a very very pale ice blue

La beige - a warm mushroom beige. This one was one that showed the unevenness of the application the most.

Latte - a yellow toned nude.

The two nude shades are very similar, so I did a comparison of Latte and La Beige to show you difference. Latte is a closer match to my skin tone and is shown on my index and ring fingers. La Beige is on my middle and pinky.

Ulta3 Autumn/Winter Textured Metallic Collection

I hadn't really heard much about the Autumn/Winter Collection from Ulta3 and then all of a sudden I saw five new polishes at my local chemist.

In the bottles they looked glittery and gorgeous with ultra fine micro glitters, but what surprised me most was when I applied the first one and found out they were a set of textured polishes.

So, textures really are a bit last year in my opinion, but then again, here in Australia we always get last seasons fashion half a year late, so I guess this is right on time for a regular Australian commercial brand. Of course Aussie indie brands are way more progressive and keep up with the popular trends right as they happen.

So despite me feeling like these have already be done, they are actually really nice. They are all opaque in two coats, aren't thick and gloopy and dry to a sparkly textured finish that isn't too rough and dry time is pretty good for a textured polish.

Although I do worry that there is nothing written on these bottles to explain to nuggles that they are meant to be left textured. I know one lady at work saw my nails wearing one of these polishes and said, 'oh, so you are meant to leave them all rough like that'. I can just see nuggles getting all annoyed at having to apply 3 layers of top coat to get them to look smooth.

Ok, lets get onto the swatches.

24 carat gold. A warm gold textured polish with both silver and gold micor glitters.

Black Quartz - a black textured polish with silver micro glitters.

From the mine. a warm copper textured polish with gold and silver micro glitters.

Galaxy. A grey textured based with gold and silver micro glitters. This one is my favourite of the bunch, a really gorgeous shade and if you only have $2 to spare on one polish, this would be my recommendation.

Moon dust. Silver micro glitter textured polish.

Ulta3 Blue Marlin and Emerald Intensity stamped gradient

I'm not feeling chatty on the blog tonight, it's the end of a very long week at work and I'm ready to crash for the night.

I wont leave you with nothing tonight though (like I did last night) so here is a stamped gradient look that I did with Ulta3 polishes Blue Marlin and Emerald Intensity. I then stamped with Mundo de Unas white and a plate I don't remember. Yep - I did that again! And you can think again if you think I'm going to go look through my sizable pile of stamping plates to find which one - especially as I just yawned twice as I typed that sentence. Oh god, and again as I actually wrote the wore YAWN. Yes every one YAWN, YAWN, YAWN - think of a big YAWN (did you catch it and end up yawning too?)
