The Polish Chrome Wars Part 10 - Are all multichrome powders the same?

To say it's been a while since I last did a post in my series about chrome powders would be a serious understatement. In fact, I don't think I could I have sat on this post for much longer!  I reckon I've had these photos edited and this post sitting here waiting to be written up for more than a year!  But at least these are things I bought myself, and not products sent for review. Then I'd be in real trouble!

In August last year I shared my swatches of the chrome pigments available at the time from Born Pretty.  Of course a year has gone by now, and they have added to their range since then, but back when I did these photos these were the only powders you could get from the BP store. So I may as well show you the comparison of the iridescent type chrome powders (the ones that are white crystallized looking powders) compared to the coloured multi chrome powders.

The multichrome powders I have here are the ones from What's Up nails. I've since got the similar powders from Born Pretty Store so I will be able to compare them, but I think I'll make you all wait a year for that! Haha.

All my swatches of the powders are applied over a black base of Dance Legend Black glitter base.

Here is a photo of the two types of chrome powders, even those these two end up looking similar on the nail, they look completely different in the jar.

The first one is Absinthe from What's up nails.

Here is the comparison the the similar shade in the iridescent multichrome powder range from the Born Pretty Store #585.  The Born Pretty one is actually sparklier, but the finish isn't as smooth and the multichrome shift nowhere near as strong.

Next up is Dragon from What's up nails. Amazing color shift on this one.

The next three shots show the comparison with Born Pretty iridescent multichrome powder #681.

Here is Paradise from What's up nails.

Born Pretty #587 is very similar in colour and shift, but again the finish isn't as smooth and its sparklier and more metallic looking.

Finally, here is Royality from What's Up Nails.

There isn't really a colour that matches the intensity of this one in the Born Pretty iridescent multichrome range, but #583 is probably the closest.

For $1.99 a pot, the Born Pretty ones really hold their own, especially when not compared to the expensive brands of powders.  But are they the same - No!

It will be interesting when I compare the BP Chameleon Powders and What's up powders to see if they really are identical.

Holo laser foil

Its been ages since I showed you something I got from the Born Pretty Store, and today's one is pretty fun, even though it doesn't quite look like what I was expecting.

I grabbed some of the 99cent, "1 Sheet Laser Nail Art Sticker Creative Pattern Mysterious Starry Sky Decals" OMG don't you just love the BPS titles for some of these things.

Anyway, what arrived was a small plastic jar with a long length of holo nail foil.  The foil is in a swirly pattern with the negative areas transparent.  It was blindingly holo, but I was eventually able to tell that the base colour to the foil is actually white.  So in low light situations these can look a bit like white stamping.

This is what they ended up looking like applied over a nude base.

This was their promo picture. Clearly photoshopped, and nothing like what I ended up with.  It think it's important to notr that the length of foil is about 3-4 cm wide, which means you will not get the full pattern of the design showing on your nail like they show in the promo picture, (unless you have really long nails).

Despite it not looking anything like the promo, it was actually really cool and looked way better in real life away from these close up photos.

I also wore it over a dark red, Pretty Serious Santa's Sunburn.  It was just as amazing, although the imperfections in my foil application were much more obvious over the dark shade.

For 99 cents, these are pretty fun, and I have loads and loads of the stuff left. If you are interested in addin git to your next BPS order, it's item #32274 called Laser Nail Art Sticker Creative Pattern Mysterious Starry Sky Decals

Foil provided for consideration.

Snake skin gel drops

With my last selection of goodies from the Born Pretty Store to review I selected a bottle of Snake Skin Gel drops.  The drops allow you to create a very easy blobicure, which when grouped closely together can give the effect of snake skin.

I tried it out with a range of different colours. This first one is a very bright hot pink gel base, and then a single layer of white gel polish.  Before curing the white layer, you apply small drops of the snake skin drops using a dotting tool.  Because the gel polish beneath is not dry it easily spreads to for the pattern.  I found it was best to do one nail at a time and then cure, otherwise the edges of the drops started to blur a bit.  It also worked better with a very thin layer of the top polish, otherwise you can hardly see the snake skin drop outlines.

I did also wonder whether this was a special product or if you could achieve the same look just using gel top coat. So of course I gave that a try.  Interestingly I couldn't get top coat to work very well.  It just kept leveling out and blending into each other.  So it turns out that this Snake Skin product is at least a little bit different to just a clear gel top coat, because it worked very well.

Here I tried a different combo.  The base is a sparkly silver foil gel polish. The top layer is a smooth jelly finish bright blue.  This one was a bit harder to see the snake pattern because the blue gel polish was so pigmented.

The Snake Skin drops gel polish is available from the Born Pretty Store. I've got a discount code somewhere, but I'm pretty sure every reader has their own discount code by now.  If not, just google it and you will find about 1000 of them.

Shimmery gradient with 3D gel polish shell

It's been ages since I played with some of my gel polishes to create something a little 3D.  I think the last thing I did was the white gel design of the face and hands for the Supernatural prompt of the 31 Day Challenge last yet.

Anywho, I spotted a shell design using gel polish somewhere, and I thought I would try my hand at that.  To give it a mermaid-ish feeling, I didn't a simple blue and pink gradient using Face of Australia Calypso Bay frosted polishes.  I then applied top coat and dipped each nail into some pink iridescent glitter.  Even with top coat applied, it was a very textured finish and super sparkly, but holy sh1t did I get glitter everywhere!

For the shell nail, I just just white gel polish to build up some ridges. I added a gold star fish charm from the Born Pretty store at the top of the nail.

Peacock nail foils

In my last set of products from the Born Pretty Store, I chose some Peacock design nail foils.  The package comes with a really long roll of the foil, so there is no worries about ensure you have enough for all your nails.  There were some beautiful pictures on the Born Pretty site that showed this foil over pastel shades and natural nails, so I thought I would try it over two darker shades.

What I didn't realise was that these foils have a full holographic sheen over the entire foil.  This reflects light beautifully, but when worn over darker polish it looks rather grey and dull in lower light situations.

I painted two nails with Picture Polish Midnite Meteor and two with Hercynia and the design looked pretty over both, although I think my preference was over Midnite Meteor.

I also stepped away from my usual go to top coat for nail foils (Picture Polish Revolution) because I was feeling lazy and there was something else in front of me that I thought I would try. Born Pretty store Mirror polish top coat.  The one and same that I used as a base coat for the mirror polish here.  It worked great, although dry time is an eternity! It doesn't wrinkle up the foil and then you can apply a regular top coat over it.

Took a quick photo of Midnite Meteor and Hercynia before applying the foils.  Geez, I can't believe how long my nails are here.  I cut them all down cause they were starting to irritate me, so I must get all these long nail photos out before I show some shorter nail ones.
