Digital Dozen does Paper - Day 2 - Gold foil wrapping paper

For day number 2, I have some gold foil nails inspired by some gold wrapping paper.  The wrapping paper is from a five roll pack that we recently purchased from Costco.  It is seriously the best wrapping paper I've ever used.  It's thick and has some sort of plasticy film over it so it doesn't tear. Plus each roll has two sides with different prints.

This gold paper is plain satin finish gold on one side and on the other side it is a mottled tarnish gold look with a super strong holo dotted finish.  It was such as surprise when we opened the roll to wrap a birthday present to find the amazing holo on the inside.

I happened to have a tiny little square of gold holo foil that was a perfect match for the paper, and thus this weeks gold foil nails were created.

Now I've actually used this foil before, and I just did a blog search to find it.  Can you believe it was 7 years ago?!? Way back in May 2010 I did this post, which was one of the first times I'd ever used foils. I suffered a terrible fail that day as I learnt how most top coats ruin the effect of foils.  Having learnt from that experience, I ensured I topped this mani with a water based top coat.  I used FNUG Aquabase as my top coat.

Holo laser foil

Its been ages since I showed you something I got from the Born Pretty Store, and today's one is pretty fun, even though it doesn't quite look like what I was expecting.

I grabbed some of the 99cent, "1 Sheet Laser Nail Art Sticker Creative Pattern Mysterious Starry Sky Decals" OMG don't you just love the BPS titles for some of these things.

Anyway, what arrived was a small plastic jar with a long length of holo nail foil.  The foil is in a swirly pattern with the negative areas transparent.  It was blindingly holo, but I was eventually able to tell that the base colour to the foil is actually white.  So in low light situations these can look a bit like white stamping.

This is what they ended up looking like applied over a nude base.

This was their promo picture. Clearly photoshopped, and nothing like what I ended up with.  It think it's important to notr that the length of foil is about 3-4 cm wide, which means you will not get the full pattern of the design showing on your nail like they show in the promo picture, (unless you have really long nails).

Despite it not looking anything like the promo, it was actually really cool and looked way better in real life away from these close up photos.

I also wore it over a dark red, Pretty Serious Santa's Sunburn.  It was just as amazing, although the imperfections in my foil application were much more obvious over the dark shade.

For 99 cents, these are pretty fun, and I have loads and loads of the stuff left. If you are interested in addin git to your next BPS order, it's item #32274 called Laser Nail Art Sticker Creative Pattern Mysterious Starry Sky Decals

Foil provided for consideration.

Peacock nail foils

In my last set of products from the Born Pretty Store, I chose some Peacock design nail foils.  The package comes with a really long roll of the foil, so there is no worries about ensure you have enough for all your nails.  There were some beautiful pictures on the Born Pretty site that showed this foil over pastel shades and natural nails, so I thought I would try it over two darker shades.

What I didn't realise was that these foils have a full holographic sheen over the entire foil.  This reflects light beautifully, but when worn over darker polish it looks rather grey and dull in lower light situations.

I painted two nails with Picture Polish Midnite Meteor and two with Hercynia and the design looked pretty over both, although I think my preference was over Midnite Meteor.

I also stepped away from my usual go to top coat for nail foils (Picture Polish Revolution) because I was feeling lazy and there was something else in front of me that I thought I would try. Born Pretty store Mirror polish top coat.  The one and same that I used as a base coat for the mirror polish here.  It worked great, although dry time is an eternity! It doesn't wrinkle up the foil and then you can apply a regular top coat over it.

Took a quick photo of Midnite Meteor and Hercynia before applying the foils.  Geez, I can't believe how long my nails are here.  I cut them all down cause they were starting to irritate me, so I must get all these long nail photos out before I show some shorter nail ones.

40 Great Nail Art Ideas - New Year

So now that Christmas is over, it's straight into nail art for the New Year.  I also have to report that I'm feeling some nail art mojo returning.  I'm thinking it was my stressful weeks at work that were wearing me out, and this time off over the Christmas/New Year period is going to recharge me nicely!

This weeks prompt in the 40 great nail art ideas is New Year and I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed with how good these turned out.

I started with a plain black base and tried to do some stamping with foils.  The idea is that you stamp like usual, and then working really fast you pretty the foil onto you nail and it will stick to the stamped image.  That was a total fail and I didn't manage to transfer anything.  All I ended up doing was transferring my stamped image on to the back of the nail art foil.

So then I grabbed out my nail art foil glue and used a fine brush to paint on the firework lines.  I then pressed the foil onto them.  I did this twice on each nail using two colours of foil, plus each foil was holographic, which is why you see more than just one colour per firework.

I have to say that these photos are prior to top coat, cause they just looked amazing.  When I added top coat I lost some of the holographic appearance, but they still looked pretty good and they didn't wrinkle.  I used two coats of Ulta3 clear and then a layer of Seche Vite.

Stamped foil roses

It's only a couple of day's out from Valentine's Day, and while it isn't a big deal for me, I actually got in the mood to do some Valentine's themed nails.

Red roses have always been romantic to me, they are the sort of flower that my husband always bought me when we were dating, what I carried down the isle when I was married and what he still gets me on our wedding anniversary.

I used stamping plate SA-13 to stamp the red roses, then I quickly pressed red nail foil onto the stamped flower.  I used a little trick that I saw on a Messy Mansion video that says to quickly wipe the film off the back of the foil and then it will adhere to the stamp much better.  Let me tell you it really works.  I then painted the green squiggly lines using Hit the bottle polish in The Green Fairy.

The base polish is also something I hadn't worn yet and I absolutely love it.  It's JOSS Oh So Shimmer Pink.  It's a perfect neutral shade on me with a pretty soft pink shimmer.

Mottled nail foils stamped with stripes

Sometimes I have an idea in my head for a manicure, but then what evolves is nothing like I had planned.  Case and point below.

The base for this manicure is actually a whole bunch of different coloured nail foils applied with nail glue in really random sections.  I didn't really like the look of that too much and needed to add something else, so I ended up doing some black lines.  Before I did the black lines I sealed in the foils with some gel top coat polish.

I actually stamped these lines, which I'm pretty damn pleased with, because I managed to keep the stamping pretty straight and even. They almost look like they were done with striping tape.  Yay for me!

I finished with a layer of seche vite to seal in the stamping.

I'm feeling ambitious - gold foil ruffian

Around this time last year, Sarah from Chalkboard nails did a blog post about various black and gold nail art ideas.  One in particular stuck in my head, and I finally remembered to do it.

Sarah titled this design the "I'm Feeling Ambitious" Foil/Gel Combo.  Mine didn't end up anywhere near as smooth and as perfect as hers, but I was super impressed how the gold holo foils maintained their gold holoiness when sealed under a gel top coat compared to a nail polish top coat.

For this mani, I started by applying and curing Gelicious Sleep Til Noon, which is a nicely pigmented black gel polish. Then, I painted a ruffian shape with nail foil glue, let the glue turn clear, and applied sheets of gold foil over the glue. One it was completely dry I sealed it all in with Gelicious Top coat and cured.

Close up photos do this no justice, because it really was a blindingly blingy mani.

Easter Eggs for Easter

Happy Easter everyone. I hope you all had or have a wonderful day.  We had a picnic mixed with egg hunts and a wander around a local park with a beautiful man made creek where the kids could float leaf 'boats' down to the larger pond.  They had a wonderful time until Miss 3 fell in the creek!

Here are my Easter nails.  I don't know what it is about nail art foil, but every Easter I'm drawn to it and end up using it for my Easter nail art design.  This year I did small chocolate foil cover eggs, where the foil has been unwrapped at the top showing the chocolate. Yummmm.

I used OPI Don't Pretzel my Buttons as my base. I love that shade, it is my perfect nude.  I then painted the egg on free hand, using the most perfect chocolate coloured polish, Picture Polish Malt Teaser.  I then applied nail foil glue to three quarters of the egg.  Once it was dry I applied a different coloured foil on each nail.  For that final extra touch, I added a little bit more foil glue at the top were the foil would be folded back.  I then applied a silver foil to those bits.  I makes them look like the silver inside of the foil wrapper is showing.

I wasn't worried about the foil crinkling up for this mani, in fact for a more realistic look, I wanted the foil a bit wrinkled.  Therefore I just slapped on a coat of Seche Vite to finish it off.

Enjoy your noms today.

Red Foils with black stamping and studs

Here is something I wore a few weeks back when I was having an odd run of wearing red polish nearly every day.

I started with a red base, which was Tuff Scent Rose smelling polish called Love.  I then applied a red patterned foil and topped it with Picture Polish Revolution. Next was some simple stamping and black round studs. Quick and easy and quite striking.

Sorry, I don't have much chit chat tonight. I've got house work I need to catch up on - whoo hoo pretty exciting stuff. I'd much rather than playing with polish or writing on my blog.

Oil slick on my nails

I've heard many a girl say that she would love to have a polish that looks like an oil slick on her nails. Today's mani started as just that, but then I went and ruined it.  Stay tuned to see that train wreck.

But to start with, here is the gorgeous oil slick effect.  I achieved this by using some very pale and transparent looking nail foils over black polish.  I used Dance Legend Nox for my black base, which is from the Lumos collection and it's a fantastic one coater.  The nail foils really came to life when I put them over black. They really do look like a wet oil slick.

The other thing you might notice here is is is my right hand.  Damn it it's hand to get my right hand looking all relaxed and natural for photos, I always feel so awkward getting it to hold a bottle, let alone my trying to take the photos with my left hand with the shutter button is on the wrong side.

Anyway, my awkwardness aside, doesn't this look amazing.  The reason you see my right hand is because I did these nails at night, and as I was half way through doing them, I realized what a dreadful FAIL I had created on my left hand, so I kept my right hand plain with just the foil on it.  Sometimes I need to learn to just leave things good and well alone!!

What what mess did I make?

I added more foil (holographic lime green in fact) and thick black lines.  Good God what was I thinking? There is definitely something alien looking about these nails.

Aren't you glad I share my fails too :)  So now, forget these ugly things, and scroll back up and look at the pretty foils on my right hand.
