Digital Dozen redoes Fashion Day 5 and Insects

Oh I love it when I combine nail art challenges and feel clever.  I'm feeling super clever with today's nail art that is for sure.

The two challenges are the Digital Dozens Fashion, and 40 Great Nail art ideas with insects.  So what does that mean, it's means finding fashion that in inspired by insects and then creating nail art on that. I very nearly went with a butterfly design, specially a monarch butterfly, because there are some amazing dresses based on the monarch butterfly, but then I spotted this beetle inspire dress and went with it instead.

I'm disappointed that I didn't choose a better yellow gold, rather the OPI Golden Eye, which was just to orange rather than the green gold that I should have used, something like Ozotic 507 would have been heaps better.

This was a bit of a mix and match of different aspects of the dress, mostly freehand with a few stamped accents.

Digital Dozen redoes Fashion - Day 4

Geez, this blog posting every day is a bit much work isn't it, but I do love how the Digital Dozen posts push me to extend my nail art.

Today's dress is a pretty one, and it actually has me doing a fairly common design that I've never done before, a fishtail pattern.  Rather than doing it with various shades of the same colour, I tried to double load my brush with two colours of polish and create each cross on the fishtail in it's own gradient.  I also did the fishtail pattern on my thumb, and of course the first thumb I did was the best, and the finger I saved for last (so I could do some practice on the others) was probably the worst.  Ah well, them's the breaks!

I was a bit lazy with this mani.  I wanted to do a gradient mani, so I actually googled gradient dress and chose this design because I could see a few different elements that I could do as different techniques.

Digital Dozen redoes Fashion - Day 3

As soon as I started playing with the new chrome powder, I started to think of different ways that I could use them.  I wanted to try it with nail vinyls and had this idea in my head, and then I found this dress on Modcloth and it was the perfect combo for Digital Dozen Fashion week.

I started with two coats of Face of Australia polish No Angel, which is a soft coral leaning pastel pink.  I then applied a layer of gel top coat, cured it and wiped away the sticky layer.  Next way laying out the straight vinyls, which is nice and easy now that the base is set hard from the gel polish.

Then just rub in the powder over the top of the vinyls.  Make sure your vinyls are stuck down really well, otherwise you might get some powder leakage underneath.  I finished it off with another layer of gel polish top coat.   What I really love about these powders is that the edges are smooth and seamless when you pull up the vinyl, unlike when you use polish and you get that little edge line,

I've got a video on this coming up on Instragram too.

Digital Dozen redoes Fashion - Day 2

For day 2 of the Digital Dozen's Fashion week, I chose to do some nail art inspired by this iconic dress that Hallie Berry wore in 2002. Wow, can you believe that was 14 years ago!

I mixed Picture Polish Munroe with some clear polish to make the sheer jelly base for beneath the flower stamping decals.  I teamed this up with Picture Polish nemesis, which is a metallic burgundy shade with a gold colour shift and holo particles.  It seemed to have just the right shimmer to match the skirt part of the dress.

I tried to paint the flowers in the same shades as on the dress, which look like cream and brownish, but the brownish colour blended in a bit with the background and made it look a bit messy.

Digital Dozes redoes Fashion - Chrome pigment pastel gradient

Digital Dozen week secretly sneaked up on me this month.  I had no idea it was this week until last night.  Then I had a dilemma. You see I had just received my chrome nail powder in the mail and I desperately wanted to play with it.  That mean't I had to search the internet to find something remotely fashionable that was also chrome. Luckily I happened upon these Nike Area 72 Chrome Collection. Now I'm not sure if it was just the lighting in these photos that made the chrome look like pastel gradient chrome, or whether these shoes are simply that awesome, but either way, I took the interpretation literally and created a pastel gradient chrome mani.

Here they are together.

Ok, so these powdered chrome nails are everywhere right now, especially on instagram.  I immediately ordered some of the silver chrome pigment from Daily Charme, and I've subsequently bought the gold and silver pigments from the Born Pretty store for way cheaper.  I just have to wait for them to arrive now.

To say it was difficult for me to get the chrome look is a bit of an understatement. I think in the end I got there ok, but it was a trial.

I started with a peel of base coat and then a layer of white polish. Onto that I did a gradient using the Pipedream neons.  I wanted something really bright to start with as I knew the colour was going to be really dulled out by the chrome finish.  On top of the gradient I did a layer of gel top coat.  I first used a layer of Dance Legend gel top coat, and while it cured perfectly and was super shiny, I wasn't able to rub in the pigment after I had wiped off the sticky layer.  I also tried my Gelicious top coat and had the same problem.

Everything I've read online says that you get the best results with a 'no wipe' gel top coat.  Of course I don't have one of those, and just used what I had.  The other issue I had was with my eye makeup applicator.  The only one I could find had spongy ends, but the plastic under the sponge was hard as a rock and make it really pointy and scratchy.  In the end, what worked for me was using my finger to rub the chrome powder in.  I was able to apply even and smooth pressure and got a much better result, although it also meant I had this silver glitter everywhere.

Speaking of which, this chrome powder is a bitch to clean up.  I've not seen very many manis with this chrome powder where the cuticles looked clean, they usually are still sparkly and covered in stuff. I understand why!!  I ended up using a scrubbing brush and soap to get most of mine off.

Finally, to finsih off this mani I did one coat of Dance Legend top coat.  It worked perfectly and didn't dull the chrome effect at all.  These also looked perfect at the end of the day too, which is pretty exciting.

I plan to do some comparisons when I get my Born Pretty powder, so see if the cheap stuff is as good as the expensive stuff, also to compare it to the chrome polishes.  Plus, there is also a new holo version of this powder, but the want $40USD for a gram.  I just don't think it's worth that, I'm holding out for the cheaper Chinese knock off.

This photo was taken without direct light and shows that the pastel finish was actually much less obvious compared to the photos taken under direct light.

My secret weapon when doing gel manis is my Picture Polish peel off glitter base.  It works even better with gel polish because it's flexible and strong, which makes it so easy to peel off in one go.

Pink and Aqua nail art ideas

I'm still keeping at it for the 40 Great Nail Art ideas challenge, even though less than half the original participants are still posting, I still love checking out what the hard core nailies put together on their nails each and every week.

This week's prompt is pink and aqua. In all my years of blogging I don't think I've ever done a pink and aqua design.  My personal prompt was tie dye, which I found really challenging with just those two colours in my pallet.  Last time I did tie dye nails, I did the classic rainbow version. I can't believe that was nearly three years ago.

I used three Dance Legend polishes for this look, plus a little bit of white polish.  I started with a base of Binary 49, Oksana, which is a classic pale baby pink.  Great formula and opaque with two thin coats.  I then topped that with the binary top coat before starting the nail art.

For the nail art I used binary 25, Lilia and Gel Effect 1036 (aqua), as well as more of Oksana to create the spiral tie dye effect.  I finished it all with another coat of the Binary top coat.

I really do love the Dance Legend Binary polishes for staying power. I've been pretty lazy with the nail art this week and I still have this mani on which I did on Monday night.  It still looks exactly like these polishes, no tip wear and no chips.

An InLinkz Link-up

Here are some bonus swatch photos of binary 49 Oksana before I put the nail art on top.  This is two coats with binary top coat.

Dance Legend polishes provided for consideration.

Stripes and confetti glitter

We've been back from our holiday for several day's now, but of course as soon as I returned to our cold wet winter from the warm tropical day's we were experiencing, I came down with a head cold. For the last two days I've been sneezing and coughing my head off.  Nothing I can take antibiotics for, just one of those things you have to ride out and eat chicken soup for!

As such, I've been a bit slack in doing my nails.  The mani I have on today is the one I did Sunday night.  I've got to go do my nails now so I have something to post for this weeks 40 great nail art ideas challenge.

This mani is one I did a few weeks back.  It's ok, but didn't end up as fun and vibrant as I had originally planned in my head. It also felt a bit disappointing because it took forever to do. I used nail vinyls and they just take me forever to use!

Holiday, Seaside or beach nail art ideas

This is the last of my scheduled posts whilst I was away on a South Pacific cruise. Its been a hard slog writing up all these posts in one day before I left.

I really like that the theme for this weeks 40 Great Nail Art ideas is Holiday, seaside or beach themed nails, because that's exactly what I've been doing.

I told you last post how much I loved the Bow polish thermal top coats.  Here is the second mani I've created with them.

I started with a soft gradient base using Picture Polish Freya's Cats and Salt Water.  I sponged on more salt water over the top to make sure the gradient wasn't too dark.  This gradient created the 'daytime' version of my mani.  Next I layered another gradient over that using the Bow thermals.  I used the blue, purple and pink shades to create a 'night time sunset' version.

When my nails were warm, the thermal top coats disappeared to show the light blue sky gradient, then they were cold, they showed the night time sunset.  So much fun!!

The stamping is from the DRK XL Seasons plate, and whilst I love this page and the images on it, I was a little disappointed with the details on the palm trees, some of the smaller ones just look like blobs rather than having nice detailed fronds.  The plate quality is great, just look at those fine detailed birds, so I just think it's the actual tree design that isn't great.

Jump on over to instagram later to see a transition video.
