The Digital Dozen does gradients - dottie gradient

True story from today.  At work in a meeting, I noticed another lady's pretty blue nail polish (as you do, because all nail polish addicts notice nails everywhere!) At the end of the meeting I commented to her about it and looked a little closer.  I noticed it was a holo and commented as much, and then asked her what brand it was, knowing it had to be an indie because we don't get mainstream polishes like that here in Australia.  Turns out she was wearing an Emily de Molly shade.  Pretty cool, but really weird when your nail work crosses over into your professional word like that.  Has anyone else had weird encounters with people about nail polish in totally unexpected places?

Stepping right out the box here with the gradient theme and am going with a monochrome dottie gradient. I just only two polishes here. JOSS Will Not and my own mixed ultra black shade made with strong black tint and lacquer base.  All the shades of grey were mixed as I went using my Uber Chic mat.

The Digital Dozen does gradients plus glitter and stamping

Whenever I get a gradient prompt in a nail art challenge I have a secret desire to make it a rainbow gradient.  I love rainbow's so much and particularly love them on my nails.  In fact in my facebook feed the other day there were stunning rings with gemstones in rainbow colours.  They are marketed toward the LGBT as pride rings, and if they weren't so expensive I'd have bought several.

So today's gradient is classic rainbow, topped with a thinned out layer of Kester Black Milky Way, which is a fine grade but very holoy silver glitter topper.






Topping it with just a thin layer of glitter isn't really going to cut it as far as a "Plus" on top of the gradient, so I pulled out my stamping gear again and did some black stamping.

I do love the contrast of black over the rainbow and it give the mani a totally different feel.

The Digital Dozen does gradients - another holo gradient but with stamping

After the success of my last holo gradient I did another, but I was a bit lazy and just used to polishes that happened to be sitting right there in front of me on my polishing table.  Cupcake Polish Elizabeth and Berry Good Looking.  They aren't really the sorts of colours that blend easily together but I was rather pleased with the final look.  These polishes have a much larger holo particle that the holos I used in my previous mani, so I didn't end up with the same linear holo lines.

I did add some simple stamping to this one using a Bundle Monster plate.  It's funny using plates like this that have a definite length to them.  Here I was thinking that my index finger nail was so long at the moment, but it turns out it's only about the same length as my pinky.  Also my middle two nails are just a tad longer.  But when I look at my nails from the other side, my index finger nail looks so much longer.  It must have a much shorter nail bed.





I did take photos of this before the stamping too. I did actually wear it like this for a full day and then stamped on it to get a second day out of the mani, so I happy to report that this mani did last nicely on me without any chipping.

The Digital Dozen does gradients - purple holo

This week's theme for the Digital Dozen is gradients, but not just plain old gradients, we need add a twist, additional art or patterns on top. So that was my plan, but sometimes a gradient on it's own is just too perfectly stunning that you can't cover it up.

I've worn this exact gradient before, which is why I chose to do it again, with something else on top. But after I finished the gradient, I couldn't bring myself to put anything on top.

These classic colours are from the original and the best holo collection the world ever saw, the China Glaze OMG collection.  I started with a single coat of OMG, and then created the gradient with OMG, IDK and  LOL. 

Aint it pretty!

40 Great Nail Art Ideas - Kids TV - My Little Pony

This weeks theme for the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas is Kids TV.  My kids used to watch a lot of TV, but probably spend more time on their ipads these days.  Popular choices for me would have been anything from the Disney Junior channel, maybe some Minnie Mouse nails, or Doc McStuffins, or Sofia the First, all popular with my 5 year old daughter.  But when it really comes down to it, there is only one show that she knows everything about and who's who.  That's My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic series.  I've gotta say, it's ridiculous how entertaining the show is and how you can easily catch yourself watching it when it's on.!

I've done plenty of MLP nail art in the past, but this time I went with an easier free hand route with some cuite mark nails of the mane six ponies.  I shared the space on my thumb for Rarity and Apple Jack.

Needless to say, Miss 6 was impressed and wanted me to paint her nails straight away.  But I'm a bit over painting her nails cause she's still a picker.  Nothing lasts 24 hours on her!

Picture Polish Merge swirly drag marble

I've just got home from a rather busy afternoon and evening.  Only got the kids into bed around quarter to ten, and it's a school night!  We had their little league baseball presentation night, and it kinda dragged on.  Of course then we had dinner at the club and ice cream at Cold Rock afterwards, so it really has been a long night.  I haven't started my nails for this weeks 40 Great Nail Art ideas, and I don't think I have the stamina to do them tonight.  The theme is children's TV and I'm thinking of doing another My Little Pony, as that would be the most watched children's TV show in our house hold, but the thought of concentrating on doing free hand nail art is making my brain hurt.

I attempted a double colour swirly drag marble and while it looks a bit like some bacteria growing in a petri dish here in these photos, it was actually a very pretty design to wear.  I was also loving the neutral brown shades mixed with sparkly bits of gold.

My base polish here is Picture Polish merge, which is a natural beige shade with scattered holo shards.  The dark brown is Ulta3 Chocolate Cake and the gold holo glitter is FUN lacquer King.

I really need to do some swatches of merge on it's own, cause it's so gorgeous just to wear by itself.

Shattered glass lines

I might be the last person to have tried shattered glass nails, and in this state I can hardly called the shattered, more like neatly aligned glass lines.  

I've wanted to do some shatter glass designs for a while now, but I just didn't have the iridescent stuff that you need to stick on your nails.  However, given it was Easter last weekend, my kids had some of this iridescent stringy stuff in a basket of eggs and I thought I would try it out in my nail art.

As my base polish I used BOW polish thermal top coat.  It's a good solid black scattered holo when it's cold and a sheer nude when it's warm.  I just loved how it looked when it was cold, not so much when it was warm.  When it's cold it showed green hues with flashes of blue and purple - very cool. When it was warm, I just saw yellow and brown zombie nails - bleh!







... and now the bleh warm version!

40 Great Nail Art Ideas - Violet Splatter

I've never done splatter nails before, and I was really dreading this prompt. I knew it was going to be messy and troublesome, which it was, but I'm surprised to say that I do actually like the finished look.

The colour prompt this week was Violet.  I clearly had a brain explosion, because whilst I did look up the colour prompt, by the time I went to do my nails a few day's later I somehow turned Violet into Lilac in my head, and I went searching for lilac shades.  Luckily the line between what is violet, lilac and purple is a big messy one, so I'm still sticking with these for my colour prompt.

According to wikipedia, the colours here on the left are shades of purple and the colours on the right are shades of violet.  So seeing this I feel a bit better about my mix up in colour choices.






I also had to take a photo of the mess I made doing the splatter technique, what you can't also see is the amount of spit I ended up with on my fingers! - YUCK!  I'd dab the straw into the polish and blow, but only 1 times out of 10 would any polish fly off.  i don't know if it was because my polish was too thick or something?  By the end, I was blowing so hard that spit was coming out the straw!! Needless to say, I can't see me doing this technique again soon.


And finally, can I just say, WOW look how long my nails are at the moment!  The only thing I have changed is I've been using Bliss Kiss cuticle oil regularly.  It's main ingredient is Jojoba oil, which apparently has a molecule size that is most similar to sebum (which is really small compared to other oils) which is why it is one of the only oils that can penetrate the nail.  Don't know if all that is true or not, but I do know that my nails are so strong and long at the moment that I have to file them down tonight because they are starting to annoy me.
