31DC2015 - Animal Print - Blue Ringed Octopus

Once again, I wanted to stay away from zebra and leopard prints for the animal print prompt of the 31 Day Challenge.  Don't get me wrong, I love zebra and leopard prints, but we usually end up seeing so many of them that I wanted to feature a different animal that displays it's amazing print.

Enter the Blue Ringed Octopus.  Blue Ringed Octopuses are only a tiny little creature about the size of a golf ball, but they sure can pack a punch.  They can be found along the Australian coast, but luckily I've never seen one. Although, I do remember mum and dad always telling us to look out for them in rock pools and to never go near them if we saw them.  They are generally regarded as the fourth most venous animal in the world, behind the Box Jellyfish, King Cobra snake and Marble Cone Snail.

To create this look I started with a coat of Picture Polish nougat.  I then applied a single coat of Lakodom.  Next I sponged on some brown spots using Demeter, and then a little bit of black polish in the cent re of the sponging.  Lastly, I painted rings using white polish over the black and brown blotches and then covered the white with bright blue polish.  To create the final dappled effect on the octopus skin, I added some more rough dots of Lakodom.

This was a rather interesting design that definitely got noticed, but I do have to say there was something a little diseased looking about these.

  2. Whoa! I've never heard of that octopus, but it looks CRAZY! What a colour. You've done a fab job of replicating it. I agree about the zebra and leopard nails - look fab, but they are everywhere.

  6. I LOVED this one. I also wanted to refrain from zebra/leo pattern, just because I've done them a lot before and want to try new stuff. I went with snake skin. :P

  7. Oooh love this!! Heh, my rule of thumb is...if it's bright it's probably deeply poisonous! :D

  8. You are such a talented artist. I mean, seriously, look how right on your nails look against the real thing. You're blowing my mind. Haha! I love doing my nails but I wish I had an ounce of your talent.

  9. After seeing various shows on Aussie wildlife, my husband and I are convinced just about all of it is venomous, especially the sea critters! Love your mani!
